What to Do When Your Ear is Clogged

When your ear is clogged, it can be very uncomfortable and annoying. If you or a loved one is dealing with a clogged ear, you must first determine what is causing the clog. For most individuals, it is built up ear wax in the ear canal. Read on for some helpful steps to take to help clear your clogged ear.

Step 1: Remove the Earwax

Your first step should be to examine the ear with an otoscope. You should be looking for any blockage such as earwax or fluid. If earwax is present, you must remove it. While an ENT doctor in Castle Rock can remove the earwax for you, it can also be attempted at home. At-home earwax flush kits can be found at pharmacies and some grocery stores.

Step 2: Get a Hearing Test

Once the earwax is removed, you should schedule a hearing test. This is because the hearing nerve can become damaged due to a clog. It is very important that you receive your hearing test within 4 weeks of removing the earwax build up, as there is only a short window of time when medication can reverse nerve damage.

But What if the Clog is Not Caused by Earwax?

If there is no earwax build-up present in the ear, and a hearing test has revealed no nerve damage, you either have fluid or pressure in the middle ear. Fluid or pressure buildup in the ear must be released in a physical manner. There is no medication that can instantaneously fix this. Sometimes, exercises such as swallowing, yawning, or nose-blowing can help to open the eustachian tube, releasing pressure.
